Glossary: Gate, Door and Dock Automation Terms

Short, plain meanings of the words you will hear when you buy or service automation.

AMC
Annual maintenance contract: scheduled servicing and support for installed equipment.
ANPR
Automatic number plate recognition: a camera system that reads vehicle plates to grant access.
Bi-folding gate
A gate whose leaves fold in the middle as they open, saving swing or side space.
Boom barrier
A horizontal arm that lifts and lowers to control vehicle entry at a lane.
Controller
The control board that receives commands from remotes, keypads or apps and runs the operator and safety devices.
Dock leveller
A platform that bridges the gap between a truck bed and the dock floor.
Dock seal
A cushion that presses against a docked truck to seal the gap around it.
Dock shelter
A frame around a docked truck that reduces dust, rain and air loss.
Duty cycle

Galvalume
Steel coated with an aluminium-zinc alloy for corrosion resistance, used in some shutters.
High-speed door
A fast-acting door, usually with a flexible curtain, used on busy openings to limit air and dust movement.
Limit switch
A device that tells the controller where the gate or door is so it stops at the right open and closed positions.
Loop detector
A wire loop in the ground that senses a vehicle above it and keeps a gate or barrier from closing on it.
Manual release
A mechanism that disengages the motor so a gate or door can be moved by hand, for example in a power cut.
Operator
The motor and drive unit that moves a gate, door or barrier.
Photocell
A pair of sensors that send an invisible beam across an opening and stop or reverse the gate or door if it is broken.
Rack and pinion
A toothed bar (rack) fixed to a sliding gate and a gear (pinion) on the motor that pushes the gate along.
Retrofit
Adding automation to an existing manual gate or door.
RFID
Radio-frequency identification: a card or tag that a reader recognises to grant access.
Rolling shutter
A door made of interlocked slats that coil around a drum above the opening.
Safety edge
A pressure-sensitive strip on a moving leaf that stops or reverses it on contact.
Sectional door
An overhead door made of hinged panels that travel on tracks and rest below the ceiling when open.
Soft start and soft stop
Gradual acceleration and slowing at the ends of travel that reduces noise and wear.
Telescopic gate
A sliding gate whose sections slide behind each other so it needs less side space.
Trackless gate
A gate that moves without a floor track, which keeps the path clear.
